Life with the Daily3 - part one
I can still remember the day I walked into a
North Hollywood liquor store in the spring of
1993. It was a Wednesday morning, and I wanted
to play my 10 quick picks for the 7 million
dollar Super Lotto draw that evening.
The "well dressed" gentleman in front of me
pulled out a clear envelope containing $100.00
worth of play slips and handed them to the
clerk. As he was putting his tickets away, I
noticed that they were tickets for a game called
the California Daily 3. What a dummy, I thought.
If I had a hundred dollars, I'd buy a hundred
quick picks for Super Lotto. After the
well-dressed gentleman left the store the clerk
explained that the California Daily 3 was a game
that involved picking 3 numbers correctly and
winners would get $500 for
choosing the numbers in the correct order. Who
would want to waste a hundred dollars on a game
that only pays $500.00 for a win I asked. The
clerk replied...how about cashing ten winning
tickets for $500 each and win $5,000?
I could certainly use $5,000.
Actually $500 would nice,
especially if one could win it 2, 3 or even 4
times a month. After all, how hard could
picking 3 numbers be? So I set out to win some
money. Well my first attempts were winless. I
was close, having one of the three numbers and
even two of the three numbers...close, but no
cigar. Now I was really determined. So each
day I would record the winning draw number to
see if I could discover some kind of a pattern.
I made charts so I could organize my
information. I didn't play much during that
time because I wanted to gather more knowledge.
And because I had to earn a living, I needed to
structure my time to study these charts. Each
day I would get up at 5 to 5:30 in the morning
and devote 2 to 3 hours to the California Daily 3.
Finally, I hit a straight and won $500.
After losing the next week I decided to choose
one 3 digit draw number and play it every day
until it hits. This was the week after
Thanksgiving and each week on Monday I would go
to 6 different stores and purchase 2 tickets for
a total of 12 tickets good for a week. I was
sure that this would turn into a winning pick 3
strategy.
I repeated that process each week during
December, January and finally in mid-February I
opened the newspaper and saw my numbers!
Fortunately, that week I purchased a couple more
tickets which brought my winnings to
$6,700. You can image my excitement. I
thought I had mastered the Daily 3.
Over 2-1/2 months, and an investment of just
under $1,000 I made $5,700 in profit.
. It took a couple of days to collect the money
since retailers don't always have the cash
available...but
that was okay, it is a great feeling when you
win lots of money.
With each store, the retailer would count out
$1,000 in cash and the other customers would
ask how I did it. And just like me, most of them
had never heard of the Daily 3.
